I have always heard this "Linux is awesome", never made a strong comment for or against because I was a Windows user . Recently i switched to Ubuntu completely. Its been a week or so and so far i have liked it . Even before Reading whats next ask yourself few questions that will make it clear whether to install Ubuntu or not
1.Do you have an active internet connection ?
2.Are you more into development than gaming?
3.Did you answer yes for the above two question ?

Now if you answer for the third question is yes then you are ready for the change and read on or else there is this red cross near the top corner press it.

So you are decided and want to install Ubuntu but then, will you still need Windows.

Q.A Dual boot with windows or Just Ubuntu?

Just Ubuntu without any Dual boot. I know this sounds demanding and little weird as to how this could make a difference .I have used with a dual boot and whenever i used to get that boot option i used to select Windows instead of Ubuntu. For someone using Windows since they got their first computer its tough to leave it and come out of the comfort zone, obviously you wont make another  house to live in when you have one.

Q.Whats wrong with the partitions ,Should I merge them ?

NO,don't I don't know the exact consequences of this (may be data loss) but i just don't find it good to keep everything on on drive.Install Ubuntu in C drive and  allot some  swap space. This size of the swap space is good if its double of that of your RAM .When you install Ubuntu the other drives have to be mounted once every time  you boot,They will be like external media ,But thats fine. Now that you have Ubuntu installed .
That my Ubuntu 12.04 now.

Q.What next,now when I have Ubuntu installed?

Now when you have Ubuntu installed the first thing you should do is get you Internet working and then use the Software Update center to do this .
  • Remove Rhythmbox
  • Install the gstreamer plugin for playing mp3 and other audio files.
  • Install Banshee
  • Install Screenlet
  • install jupitor
  • Install VLC
  • Install Gimp
  • Install Inkscape
  • Install flash player
  • Install and configure Oracle java
  • Install Eclipse /Aptana or whatever IDE Preferred.
  • Update all Packages.
Here I will talk only about Two apps that I find needs some explanation.
The Screenlet: I use it for displaying lyrics (it has other widgets but dont use them much ,Look at the screen shot above and the lyrics thats being displayed )

Jupiter:I found that after installing ubuntu my battery lasted less . So Downloaded this nice little app that is a power management system which allows to put your laptop in different modes , Power saver ,Power on demand , maximum Performance .

Q.What about games ?

I remember you saying Yes for the second question asked . So games don't run well on Ubuntu and But you can try 'Wine' with 'PlayonLinux' to run  some of the games as far I am concerned I am happy with this game called 'gBrainy' and using .

That's all ,even i am new to ubuntu so do share anything amazing about it and i am not switching back to windows now.
